LED Lights Up Push-2-Pass
Famous for its matrix LED technology, Audi brings more crowd-pleasing technology to the Cup with Push-to-Pass indicators lighting up whenever drivers unlock the extra 50 horsepower, 10- second power burst, and illuminated numerals showing how many P2P boosts remain. The P2P rear windscreen indicators flash red when engaged in the professional drivers’ cars, with blue lights on the amateur entries. The indicators give fans a greater insight into team strategy and, even more intriguingly, the drivers’ lightning-quick instincts under extreme pressure.
The starting grid for each Audi R8 LMS Cup race this season will be decided by a separate qualifying session, giving all drivers maximum track time and a chance to earn an extra point for pole position. As well as doubling the tension for fans, drivers who fail to finish the opening race are not disadvantaged in the second, meaning two flat-out, full-field, no-holds-barred battles each weekend. The new format also aligns the Cup with its partner series, Blancpain GT Series Asia, providing continuity for Audi drivers across the two championships.
Extra Practice Pirellis
Official Formula One tyre supplier Pirelli joins the Cup from this season, and along with the new partner comes the option for all drivers to have a 3rd set of new tyres for free practice sessions each weekend. This gives the teams what could prove a crucial opportunity to test set-up on fresh tyres, particularly at the two new tracks on the calendar this season, Suzuka and Zhejiang.
For Cup drivers, the choice of expert service providers just got even wider with the addition of Belgian-based Audi factory team WRT. WRT has chosen the Cup with which to make its Asian debut, describing it as the ‘perfect fit’ with which to continue its long and fruitful association with Audi Sport as it sets out to replicate its European success in the world’s most dynamic region.
Simultaneously rewarding ambition, breaking down geographical boundaries and leveraging its global motorsport footprint, the Audi R8 LMS Cup opens doors across the world, facilitating entry to some of the greatest Blue Riband races for its drivers. This year, the Amateur Cup-winning team will receive a coveted entry into the 2018 24 Hours of Spa at Belgium’s Spa-Francorchamps, home of the legendary Eau Rouge combination. This reward is an extension of the Cup’s partnership with Blancpain GT Series and Spa 24 Hours organisers, SRO, and comes in addition to the prize of free tyres for the entire season for the Amateur Cup champion, courtesy of Audi Sport customer racing Asia.
