Beijing, March 10, 2020 – Audi Sport Asia Team TSRT returns to GT World Challenge Asia with the full season Audi R8 LMS entry of Audi Sport Asia drivers Chen Weian and Shaun Thong. Both of the young talents have contested one full GT World Challenge Asia season apiece, but this will be the first time they have shared a cockpit. The combination is an exciting one as both Chen and Thong have taken a number of titles with the Audi R8 LMS in Asia in recent years and, between them, have contested some of the world’s premier GT races with the four rings, including the FIA GT World Cup and the Nürburgring 24 Hours.
“Chen Weian and Shaun Thong are both highly talented Chinese drivers. They have already taken great strides in their development with the four rings", said Martin Kuehl, Director of Audi Sport customer racing Asia. “Together with TSRT, one of China's leading customer outfits, they will be a force to be reckoned with over the season.”
Chen Weian of Hangzhou, China contested his first full season of GT World Challenge Asia in 2019 with Audi Sport Asia Team TSRT, taking a podium in Buriram, Thailand and four other top-five finishes on his way to finishing 10th overall, sixth in the Silver Cup.
Hong Kong, China-native Thong competed in the full first season of GT World Challenge Asia in 2017 with the Audi R8 LMS. He missed out on the overall GT3 title by just three points that year, winning two races and scoring four additional podiums on his way to winning the Silver Cup alongside driver partner Marchy Lee.
Along with contesting the overall GT3 title in 2020, the duo will be entered for the Silver Cup as per their FIA categorisation and the new Asia Cup classification for all-Asian driver duos.
Long-term Audi partner in the region, Tianshi Racing Team (TSRT), embarks on its second full GT World Challenge Asia campaign as an official Audi Sport Asia team. The Chinese squad has won a number of championships with Audi race cars in China, and is increasingly setting its sights on pan-Asian glory, winning the Asian Le Mans Series 2019 GT-AM drivers’ title with Max Wiser and the Audi Sport R8 LMS Cup’s AM+ Cup with Chen in 2017. The squad also entered two cars into the 2019 Macau Grand Prix, with Chen contesting the FIA GT World Cup with the Audi R8 LMS and Billy Lo the WTCR triple-header in an Audi RS 3 LMS.
The R8 LMS GT3 of Audi Sport Asia Team TSRT will be run in collaboration with fellow official Audi Sport Asia team, X Works. The entry will form part of a three-car stable, joining the previously-announced Sandy Stuvik/Shae Davies and Philip Tang Audi R8 LMS entries.
The Audi Sport Asia Team TSRT entry swells the Audi contingent announced so far for the fourth season of GT World Challenge Asia to five: four R8 LMS GT3s and one R8 LMS GT4.
GT World Challenge Asia kicks off at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia before visits to Thailand’s Chang International Circuit and then Japan’s Suzuka Circuit and Fuji Speedway. The 11-race series then closes out with two trips to Shanghai, China, the second of which being the three-hour Shanghai888 endurance event.
