Zhuhai, July 5, 2020 – Zun Motorsport Crew celebrated immediate success as club racing launched back into action at the Zhuhai Motorsport Association (ZMA) season-opener. Ma Ka Chun swept to an emphatic pole-to-flag overall victory in his Audi R8 LMS GT3. Teammate Yang Baijie crossed the line second overall in his Audi R8 LMS, winning the GTC class from Landsail Motorsport’s Liao Dongcheng. It was a strong showing too for the Audi RS 3 LMS as Tian Kai took second in class for Champ Motorsport ahead of TSRT’s Liang Yongchao.
“It’s very positive to see track action resume in China and our customers and teams have hit the ground running,” said Alexander Blackie, Manager of Audi Sport customer racing Asia. “Congratulations to Ma Ka Chun and Zun Motorsport Crew for the overall win, and to all of our customers and teams for their class win and podiums.”
The ZMA overall win puts Ma out in front in the new-for-2020 Audi Sport Asia Trophy standings on 1,575 points. The Audi Sport Asia Trophy rewards customer entries and performances across the region’s series and events in all Audi Sport customer racing machinery.
As the roar of racing engines once again echoed across China’s Pearl River Delta, the 12-strong ZMA “A-Class” field lined up for the rolling start on the 4.318km Zhuhai International Circuit. Pole-sitter Ma Ka Chun immediately blasted clear of the chasing pack, with Zun Motorsport Crew teammate Yang Baijie also getting away well from P2. The pair did not look back on their charge to a one-two Audi R8 LMS finish.
As the Zun Motorsport Crew pair continued their charge to victory at the front, Liao Dongcheng was powering his Landsail Motorsport Audi R8 LMS up through the order from his P8 start to cross the line second in the A3 class for GTC vehicles and fifth overall.
It was a challenging weekend for Landsail Motorsport’s Zhu Huayu in his Audi R8 LMS. Having missed out on qualifying after damage sustained during Saturday’s practice, Zhu started from the back of the grid but a charge through the field in the opening laps saw him climb to fifth in the order. However, his eye-catching run was ended when he was forced to retire the following lap.
Champ Motorsport’s Tian Kai fought hard to make up places he’d lost at the start from his P6 grid position, regaining ground to finished sixth overall and second in the A5 class for TCR machinery ahead of Audi RS 3 LMS rival Liang Yongchao of TSRT.
Round two of the season gets underway at the Zhuhai International Circuit on September 19-20.
