Four Audi R8 LMS set for China GT’s GTGP season opener

  • FAW-VW Audi Racing Team enter Cheng Congfu and Anthony Liu
  • X Works and YC Racing complete trio of Audi R8 LMS GT3s
  • Project Racing by Champ Motorsport enters Audi R8 LMS GT4 at Ningbo curtain-raiser

Ningbo, May 27, 2021 – FAW-VW Audi Racing Team leads a formidable four-team Audi entry as the six-round 2021 China GT Championship gets underway this weekend with the GTGP event at the Ningbo International Speedway. Audi Sport Asia driver Cheng Congfu and experienced privateer Anthony Liu kick-off their title tilt together in the Absolute Racing-run team.

Further strengthening the Audi R8 LMS GT3 line-up are former Audi Sport R8 LMS Cup champion Marchy Lee who joins David Pun at X Works, while Audi Sport Asia driver Chen Weian is partnered by Wu Ruihua at YC Racing. Am driver Cao Qi, meanwhile, races solo in the Project Racing by Champ Motorsport Audi R8 LMS GT4.

“With a balanced line-up of top Chinese professional talent and passionate privateers across the four competitive Audi entries, our customer teams will be in the hunt for podiums this weekend in Ningbo,” said Alexander Blackie, Manager of Audi Sport customer racing Asia. “We wish all of our teams and drivers the best of luck.”

Both Cheng Congfu and Anthony Liu have proven their Audi R8 LMS GT3 credentials on countless occasions, including on their race-winning debut together in China GT in 2017. The duo will be looking to continue that form in the FAW-VW Audi Racing Team R8 LMS.

Meanwhile, X Works boss and Audi legend Marchy Lee makes his first appearance behind the wheel since taking second overall with the Audi R8 LMS in the 2020 Macau Grand Prix GT Cup. He is joined by fellow Hong Kong China driver David Pun.

In the YC Racing R8 LMS GT3, Audi Sport Asia driver Chen Weian will lend his weight of experience once more to Audi customer racer Wu Ruihua – reforming a partnership from the 2020 China Endurance Championship’s season-closer also held at the Ningbo International Speedpark.

GT competition newcomer Cao Qi impressed greatly on his debut last month at the first meeting of the Zhuhai Motorsports Association event of 2021, taking a class podium finish in the Champ Motorsport Audi R8 LMS GT4.

The Audi contingent will be looking to claim an early championship lead as the 2021 China GT season gets underway with the GTGP, but the four Audi Am drivers also have the chance to earn substantial Audi Sport Asia Trophy points. A race win in the GT3 class carries 630 Audi Sport Asia Trophy points, while victory in the GT4 category would earn Cao Qi 420 points towards the season-long competition.

The 4.010km Ningbo International Speedway runs in an anti-clockwise direction, includes 22 turns and, since opening in 2017, has hosted rounds of the FIA World Touring Car Cup (WTCR) and the F3 Asian Championship certified by FIA as well as countless domestic series.

The curtain-raiser to China GT 2021 gets under on Friday, May 28, with two hour-long open practice sessions. Two separate qualifying sessions each for the GT3 and GT4 runners begin at 10:00 on Saturday, May 29, with the hour-long race 1 starting at 14:40 local time. Race 2 gets underway at 14:20 on Sunday, May 30 (all times UTC+8).
